22 May First Anniversary: Commemoration Programme

To mark the anniversary of the devastating Manchester Arena attack last year, Manchester City Council is organising a programme of commemoration events based around Remembrance; Reflection and Celebration of Life – recognising each of the 22 people who lost their lives in the attack, those who were injured and first responders – and Manchester Together, embracing the solidarity shown by the city.

Saturday 19 – Sunday 27 May

Trees of Hope
8am-11pm, 
Victoria Station to St Ann’s Square

A trail of 28 Japanese Maple Trees. People will be able to leave personal messages of hope and support for those affected. The trail will be manned by volunteers.

Tuesday 22 May

Remembering Together
Civic Memorial Service
2-3pm, Manchester Cathedral and Cathedral Gardens

A Civic Memorial Service will be held at Manchester Cathedral. The service will be live-streamed in Cathedral Gardens and shown in York Minster, Glasgow Cathedral and Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral.  The service will be attended by bereaved families and first responders.

Road Closures around the Cathedral:

From 8am-4pm: Cathedral Street, Fennel Street Victoria street and Cathedral Approach.
From 10.30am-6pm: Cateaton Street.

National Minute’s Silence
2.30pm

The city and country will come together to observe a minute’s silence at 2.30pm.

Manchester Together – With One Voice
6pm, Albert Square open to the public
7.30pm, mass singalong

Over 4000 performers, supported by choirs from across the region, will come together for a mass singalong in a united act of remembrance.

Road closures will run in two phases around Albert Square:

From 12pm:
Mount Street (between Peter Street and Albert Square)
Southmill Street (between Bootle Street and Albert Street)
Albert Square (between Lloyd Street and Cross Street)
Lloyd Street (between Albert Square and Deansgate)
Princess Street (between Cross Street and Cooper Street)
Cross Street (between Tib Lane and Princess Street)
St Ann Street (At the junction of Deansgate)

From 4.30pm:
John Dalton Street (between Albert Square and Deansgate)
Southmill Street (between Peter Street and Bootle Street)
Princess Street (At the junction of George Street)
Cross Street (At the junction of King Street)
Booth Street (At the junction of Mosely Street)

Metrolink Shuttle services will be suspended from 3pm.

10.31pm
City Centre

At 10.31pm on 22 May, a year since the attack took place, bells will ring out.

Tuesday 22 – Saturday 26 May

Manchester Together – There is a Light
St Ann’s Square & New Cathedral Street

For five nights, song lyrics chosen by the public will be projected onto pavements and buildings.
