Manchester’s Business Improvement District (BID) works with partners, retailers and cultural venues to host an event in the heart of the shopping district each summer.

From 2013-2015, the BID delivered Dig the City, Manchester’s summer garden festival which attracted more than 1 million people and won RHS, tourism and event awards. We followed this with One Big Summer Weekend in 2016 and 2017, a collaboration with Manchester Jazz Festival.

Our summer events family-friendly, aimed at attracting visits and spend during the usually quieter summer period for retailers. We promote through our city marketing partnerships and PR.

Our 2018 event in collaboration with public art exhibition Bee in the City will take place over the weekend of 28th – 29th July.

Bee in the City: July – September 2018 

A giant colony of more than 80 super-sized bee sculptures will wing their way to Manchester this summer.

The Bee in the City world-class sculpture trail is inspired by Manchester’s celebrated worker bee emblem which has been part of the city’s heraldry for over 150 years and is synonymous with Manchester’s pioneering and creatively industrious spirit.

The trail will be on display throughout the city for 9 weeks from July to September for Mancunians and visitors to enjoy whilst taking in the city’s landmarks, cultural gems and areas they may not have explored before.

Sponsor a Bee 

Sponsorship of the bees is available to all Manchester business and individuals, benefits include:

  • 12 month association with a high profile and media friendly event
  • Marketing and brand exposure; logo and descriptor on your Bee’s plaque, adoption certificate
  • Logo on the Bee in the City website
  • Logo on the Bee in the City app plus product/service integration with the app rewards
  • VIP tickets to Bee in the City events
  • Enhanced relationships with key stakeholders including other Bee in the City supporters
  • Account management support


Sculptures can be indoor or outdoor, in an ideal scenario the location should be in a place where it can be seen and accessed at all times as the sculptures form part of a trail however we understand that this is not always possible. To be discussed between the sponsor and organisers.

Design Process 

Over 300 artists well-known, emerging and as yet, undiscovered have submit designs which are presented to sponsors who select their own unique piece of artwork at a special event on the 9 April, the successful artists are commissioned to customise each sculpture – this is where sponsors can then work with the artist to potentially make some changes on the design.
