Tackling Air Pollution

26th Feb 2019

Mayor Andy Burnham, Transport for Greater Manchester and Leaders from across the city region have shared their approach to deal with poor air quality.

A report outlines the wide-ranging proposals to tackle the urgent problem of air pollution, in particular nitrogen dioxide, across the city-region, which contributes to the equivalent of 1,200 deaths a year in Greater Manchester alone.

The report puts forward a package to clean up the city-region’s bus, HGV, taxi, private hire and van fleets – future-proofing the road transport system and helping to make it fit for residents today and for generations to come.

Proposed Clean Air Zone

The report also proposes a Clean Air Zone covering all 10 Greater Manchester local authorities, the largest Clean Air Zone outside London.

The zone would require owners of high-polluting, non-compliant HGVs, buses, taxis, private hire vehicles, vans and minibuses – but not cars – to pay a daily penalty to drive in Greater Manchester.

The report concludes that in order for these measures to be taken forward considerable financial support will be needed from government to support businesses to switch to cleaner vehicles and sustain economic growth.
