Metrolink overnight track works near to the Piccadilly Gardens tram stop and on Aytoun Street, road closure on Mosley Street and 7 day closure of the city centre Metrolink line.
Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and partners in the transport industry are investing in our roads and public transport networks to ensure its continued safe, reliable and efficient operation. As part of this TfGM and the Metrolink operator KeolisAmey (KAM), regularly carry out maintenance, repairs and renewal work to track, overhead electric wires and other vital equipment.
It is for that reason essential track replacement work is due to be carried out near to Piccadilly Gardens Metrolink stop and on Aytoun Street.
Initial advanced track preparation works will be carried out overnight near to the Piccadilly Gardens Metrolink stop between midnight and 5:00am from Sunday 25 July to Friday 30 July. These works will not require any road closures.
Further works involving closures will then be required from Saturday 31 July to Friday 6 August 2021 on a section of curved track located on between Piccadilly Gardens Metrolink stop and Mosley Street, near to the M&S store.
A road closure is required on Mosley Street between New York Street and Piccadilly bus station. Access for vehicles along New York Street will remain available throughout the works.
Bus services normally accessing the bus station from Mosley Street will be diverted along New York Street, Portland Street and then into the bus station. Pedestrian access will be maintained around the work site on Mosley Street.
Additional essential track replacement work will be carried out on Aytoun Street close to the junction of Portland Street from Saturday 31 July to Monday 2 August. The work will take place on the segregated section of track and vehicular access will be maintained along Aytoun Street.
The city centre Metrolink lines will close from after the last tram at 1:00am on Saturday 31 July until the first tram in service at 4:40am on Friday 6 August 2021.
A bus replacement service will be in operation between Deansgate Castlefield, Victoria and Piccadilly rail station. Customer Service Representatives will be at hand and temporary signage in place to direct passengers.
Due to the proximity of the Metrolink works to the track, overhead electric wires, and the need to use Road Rail Vehicles, 24-hour working will be required throughout this period when trams are not running. This will ensure that the repairs will be completed as quickly as possible to minimise disruption to the local community and travelling passengers.
Work will require the use of grinding machinery, saw cutters, drills and other equipment and will be noisy at times. Measures will be in place to reduce noise levels to minimise disturbance where possible.
Other Metrolink rail replacement works will also take place across the wider network over the summer period to ensure the most efficient use of the closures.
