Remembrance Sunday 2023: Road Closures, Parking & Travel Planning

Remembrance Sunday: 12th November 2023

Manchester’s annual Service of Remembrance will take place at the Cenotaph, St Peter’s Square from 10.30am–12 noon.

Due to the expansion of works around the Town Hall and Albert Square, the Military Parade will form up on John Dalton Street (previously St Peter’s Street) and march down Princess Street next to the side of the Town Hall access the Cenotaph area opposite the junction with Cooper Street.

Civic representatives will assemble in Manchester Central Library. They will leave the library through the glazed link and onto Mount Street and process from Peter Street, along the parade route, led by the Pipes and Drums and Police/Fire Escort and make their way to the Cenotaph.

  • The route and cenotaph will be fenced off from the public.
  • There will be approximately 4,000 in attendance.
  • An screen will be situated near Central Library to aid public viewing.

Veterans and military personnel will march from John Dalton Street to the Cenotaph, where a service will be held.

The Service begins at 10.58 with the act of remembrance, followed by the gun salute and 2 minutes silence. There will be a reading/prayer from each of the faith group representatives. The service will conclude with the National Anthem.

This will be followed a short march to Peter Street across St Peter’s Square.

A two-minute silence will be observed commencing at 11am. The start and finish of the two-minute silence will be signified by the firing of a gun.

Road Closures

The following closures will be implemented from 07:00-13:00

  • John Dalton Street (Deansgate to Cross Street)
  • Princess Street (Cross St to Portland St) – hard closure at Back George St
  • Cross Street (Princess Street to King Street)
  • Peter Street (Deansgate to Oxford Street) – hard closure at Watson Street
  • Oxford Street (Peter Street to Portland Street) – hard closure at Hall Street
  • Mount Street (Windmill Street to Albert Square)
  • Museum Street (Windmill Street to Peter Street)
  • Southmill Street (Windmill Street to Albert Square)
  • Bootle Street (Deansgate to Mount Street)
  • Lloyd Street (Deansgate to Southmill)
  • Jackson Row (Deansgate to Southmill)
  • Central Street (Southmill to Mount Street)
  • Cooper Street (Kennedy to Princess Street)
  • West Mosely Street (Booth Street to princess Street)
  • Bow Lane (Clarence Street to Princess Street)
  • St James’s Square (South King Street to John Dalton Street)
  • Ridgefield (Mulberry Street to John Dalton Street)

Parking Suspensions

All bays (including accessible) will be suspended from 8pm on Saturday 11 November to 5pm on Sunday 12 November 2023 here:

Other Transport

  • No trams will run through St Peter’s Square between 10.02am and 12.30pm
  • Metrolink staff will be on St Peter Square Stop from 10.00am
  • There will also be additional Metrolink staff in their control centre
  • Metrolink customer service staff will be based across city centre stops and to be deployed as required
