Rule of Six Regs for Food & Drink Businesses

18 September: Government regulations that apply to any business in a public house, café, restaurant or other business which provides food or drink for consumption on the premises:

Persons responsible for such businesses must take all reasonable measures to ensure that no bookings for groups of more than 6 are taken, no group of more than 6 is admitted to the premises, no-one mingles between groups of 6 and an appropriate distance is maintained between tables.

Appropriate distance is either 2 metres or 1 metre with screens or other defined arrangements.

It is an offence to contravene the requirements which is subject to Fixed Penalty Notice payable to the local authority in the sum of £1,000 or £500 if paid within 14 days. The amount will increase for subsequent offences. The FPN can be issued by a designated local authority officer, a constable or PCSO.

The regs will be reviewed in 6 months and remain in force for 12 months.
