CityCo Business Engagement Sessions: Homelessness and Street Begging

In March, CityCo will be focusing on briefing members about partnership work that is helping to tackle homelessness and street begging in Manchester.

CityCo, Manchester City Centre BID and Accommodation BID members are welcome to join for all, or just selected sessions.

All will be hosted by Alex King-Byatt, CityCo Partnership Director, with a series of guests. We look forward to seeing you at our new Training Room: 5th Floor, St George’s House.

Session 1: Friday 1st March, 9.15-10.30am

Understanding rough sleeping in the city centre.

A basic awareness session for businesses who want to understand more about the complex subject of rough-sleeping, with Neil Cornthwaite from Barnabus and Gareth Clarke and Peter Bell from MCC Rough Sleeping Support Service. We will look at questions such as:

  • Why do we have people sleeping rough in the city centre?
  • What can I do when I see a person sleeping rough?
  • Is he/she getting any help?

Session 2: Wednesday 6th March, 9.15-10.30am

Introduction to the Manchester Street Engagement Hub (Day-Time Economy Focus)

A session for businesses who want to understand more about the pioneering Street Engagement Hub, with Lennie Kinsella from Riverside Housing, Greater Manchester Police and Hub partners.

Led by the police, the Hub works with mental and physical health professionals, housing providers and grassroots charities. We will look at questions such as:

  • How do partners work together to get people off the streets?
  • How can we reduce crime and anti-social behaviour?
  • How can we support people’s complex needs?
  • What methods does the Street Engagement Hub use?
  • How and what to report?

Session 3: Wednesday 13th March, 9.15-10.30am

Learning more about Real Change MCR.

A session for businesses who want to learn about Manchester’s alternative-giving fundraising campaign, with James Charnock from MMU, Stephanie Moore from Reach Out to the Community and Jane Davies from MCC’s Homelessness Directorate.

Real Change MCR is the city centre fund that gets people who are sleeping rough into their own homes. Led by a team of volunteers from CityCo, city centre businesses, MMU and MCC, the fund works to quickly secure tenancies. We will look at questions such as:

  • How does the fund work to turn donations into long-term change for some of Manchester’s most vulnerable people?
  • How can city centre businesses help?
