Safer Retail MCR

Safer Retail MCR is a city-wide initiative designed to create safe, welcoming spaces across Manchester city centre.

We know that when people feel vulnerable, they often seek out places where they believe they will be safe. In many cases, this means approaching recognisable shops – even if they are not officially designated as a “Safe Space.”

When this happens, we want to ensure that colleagues offering support feel confident and prepared. It’s important they understand what they should, and shouldn’t do, in order to keep themselves, the individual, and the business safe.

Below is guidance, based on best practice, outlining how to support anyone who may be feeling vulnerable.

National Campaign

Safer Retail MCR supports the National Retail Crime Centre’s ‘Operation Portum’, working to expand safe spaces in retail premises across the UK. Learn more at nbcc.police.uk/partnerships/safe-spaces

Manchester Arndale Pilot Scheme: Store Teams

Retail teams play a vital role in creating safe, welcoming stores. Colleagues are encouraged to stay aware, be ready to offer support, and step in when someone needs help. Often, even a small gesture can make a big difference.

What do we need to do?

Please take a look at the simple guidelines and accompanying video below. We encourage you to share this information with your teams and discuss it during briefings so colleagues feel confident about what to do if support is needed.

How do we join Safer Retail MCR?

There is no cost to join. If you are using the materials and rolling out the initiative in your store, please let the Arndale management team know.

Do I need to share any feedback?

Examples of situations you’ve encountered are extremely helpful, as they allow us to encourage more businesses to join the scheme.
